Green Holidays in Cornwall
We do not claim to be completely green. We simply have an environmental conscience and decided to work with nature when renovating our old cyder barns into cottages. We wanted to create luxury accommodation but became increasingly concerned about our impact on the environment, especially given the beautiful area of Cornwall we live in.
Our new barns are the ultimate in recycling, bringing to life disused agricultural barns and creating beautiful buildings worked on painstakingly by local skilled craftsmen. We have re-used the local slate and granite and used natural paint finishes and lime. We have installed deluxe spa bathrooms, LCD TVs and high-tech kitchens but the electricity is either from ground source or a green energy tariff from 100% renewable sources. We hope to harness the springs running through our grounds to generate electricity in the next year.
We have installed a rainwater harvesting system, which collects rainwater and uses it to flush the toilets and for the washing machine. We also have a wonderful walk in wet-room. Geothermal heating takes heat from the ground and gently warms the luxury limestone floors and we have used natural lambs wool to insulate the walls. Additionally, the barns have been opened up to face South to use passive solar heat gain.
We use local and organic produce for breakfast wherever we can and our toiletries are either natural or organic and mostly handmade in Cornwall. We provide recycling facilities in the kitchens and grounds and there are also composting facilities within the grounds for the guests' use.
Coriander Cottages are set in two acres of wildlife gardens. Plus there is an ancient badger sett within the grounds, wildlife and duck ponds and a small nature trail. We have also purchased an oak tree for every month the barns took to build, which we will be planting on completion.
Tourism impacts on our environment, the stunning scenery and wildlife which tourists come to see needs preserving. We are members of Cornwall Wildlife Trust and donate 1.00 from each booking to the charity to local projects, such as nature reserves and marine projects. Plastic carrier bags cause untold damage to our wildlife and environment, please consider not purchasing any plastic carrier bags whilst you stay with us. We have plenty of C.o.a.S.T jute bags for guests to borrow during their stay, or the bags can be purchased by donating 4.00 to the Cornwall Wildlife Trust donation box. Thankyou for your understanding.
